In just over six decades IKEA went from the woods of southern Sweden to being a multinational furniture retailer with stores in over 40 countries around the world. They offer a wide range of functional and well-designed home furnishing products for the living room, bedroom, kitchen, garden and dining room at very low affordable prices. Their philosophy is that anybody can make a good-quality furniture for a high price, or poor-quality for a low price, but to make good products at low prices, you need to develop cost-effective and innovative methods. This has been Ikea's focus since its beginnings and by maximising the use of raw materials they buy and production adaptation they save costs which they pass on to their customers.
Whether it's a leather or fabric sofa, a flatpack storage unit, a built-in kitchen or new bedroom, you'll find plenty of furniture ideas in their stores, shopping catalogue or online through their website. The Ikea site doesn't just let you buy all their product direct online in the uk for home delivery, but also features a wide range of useful buying guides, furnishings advice and room planners. You can also order their furniture catalogue online. There's also interest free credit available at Ikea for 12 months on kitchens and installation when you spend over £1,500 or 24 months free credit at 0% interest when you spend over £3,000 on kitchens and accessories. This is only available in-store.
.The IKEA story began in 1943 when founder Ingvar Kamprad was just 17 and founded the furniture company. The initial focus in the 40s and 50s was on design, self assembly, advertising, the use of a showroom and catalogue to reach the many customers. The IKEA took further shape in the 60s and 70s with new stores opening and hero products such as KLIPPAN and BILLY bookcase being developed. Ingvar documents the concept in "The Testament of a Furniture Dealer". In the 80s Ikia expands dramatically into new markets such as the UK, USA, Italy and France. The 90s and 2000s IKEA keeps on growing and expanding both its territories and product ranges, including delivering co-ordinated furniture solutions for everything from the bedroom to the kitchen. There currently are 18 Ikea stores in the UK where you can buy and pick up their products direct: Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Coventry, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, London Wembley, London Croydon, Edmonton, London Lakeside, Manchester Ashton, Manchester Warrington, Milton Keynes, Newcastle Gateshead, Nottingham and Southampton. The Warrington one was the first store to start selling furniture and home furnishings to the public in Britain in 1987, while the Lakeside one is currently the biggest store at 37,000 square metres.
